grumpy old prophets

Calling CoverThe Grumpy Old Prophets series started out as an attempt to help my church the experience the Christmas story from a fresh perspective. I was serving as interim music minister at the time and I wanted to do something different for the Christmas canata.

One day, while chatting with my daugther, we somehow arrived at the Transfiguration. As you probably know, in the days just prior to Jesus’ death and resurrection, Matthew records a meeting held on a high mountain. Shining in the brilliance of his birthright, Jesus confers with Moses and Elijah. Matthew doesn’t record the conversation but it the passage did make me wonder: If Moses and Elijah were present for the Transfiguration, who’s to say they weren’t around earlier—perhaps much earlier? And who’s to say they didn’t help a bit?

Wanting and Waiting CoverThat year (Christmas 2002), we put on “Grumpy Old Prophets.” I wrote the script, pulled some music from other cantatas and our Master’s Commission group handled the drama and sets. Everyone seemed to enjoy it!

Years later, I decided it was time to finish what I started.

I rewrote the original version and titled it Calling, (Grumpy Old Prophets, Part1).

Then came, Wanting and Waiting, (Grumpy Old Prophets, Parts 2-3). It covered the earthly ministry of Jesus.

Knowing CoverThen, I wrote Knowing, (Grumpy Old Prophets, Part 4). It covers the final week of Jesus’ life on Earth.

And finally, I finished the series with Acting, (Grumpy Old Prophets, Part 5) which covers the ressurection and the early church.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I do know that writing this series has changed how I approach life. If that’s all it accomplishes, it was certainly worth it!

Thankfully, it seems to have touched a few others already. Here’s a sampling of comments from the Beta readers:

Gary Fleet on Calling, “Great fable! Wonderful blend of humor and thought provoking concepts. I was brought to tears in the scene when Mary tells of her devotion to her Son.”

Melissa Larabee on Wanting and Waiting, “I loved your book!!!! Wanting and Waiting is hilariously funny, while at the same time, causes you to stop and think about what life must have really been like for those who knew Christ.”

Charlie Nance on Knowing, “Wow! This was one of the most powerful descriptions of the crucifixion I have ever seen. It moved me at so many levels.”

Charles McDonald on Acting, “This is definitely a book that challenges what you thought you knew so well.  It turns the ‘truth’ on it’s head and sheds new light on the familiar.  It’s a great ending to a superb series.”
